In 2013, around 70% of households of Guatemala relied on firewood for cooking. To accelerate the deployment of clean cooking solutions in the country, the Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) explored the possibility of selecting Guatemala as a focus country.
Eneris was mandated by the CCA to conduct a stocktake study of the national clean cooking sector. Based on this assessment, Guatemala became a focus country, and Eneris subsequently developed the National Clean Cooking Action Plan of Guatemala, in close collaboration with national stakeholders. The Action Plan set out 25 well-defined actions to guide sector development.
After this assessment, Eneris continued to work in Guatemala with the Public Health Institute (PHI), which sought to promote clean cooking through liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) using evidence-based data and engagement of decision-makers and industry. Eneris carried out a market study on LPG for households and socially responsible businesses and, together with the Ministry of Energy and Mines and private actors of the LPG sector, developed an action plan outlining seven strategic opportunities to expand the market for LPG for cooking in Guatemala and therefore reduce the negative health, environmental and economic impacts associated with traditional use of firewood for cooking.
